Floral Impressions Appliqué

How many of us have admired the beautiful appliqué work of fantastic designer Deborah Kemball and lusted after emulating her?

We are delighted to say that Quilter’s Guild member Janice Lawson  has done just that, and what a bouquet.

She has sent us a couple of  photos of Floral Impressions cushions she has finished and said that she has also worked on a Floral Impressions quilt top, so we look forward to seeing that when it has been quilted.

The Kemball appliqué  bug has obviously bitten since Janice contacted us about ordering specific Fat 8ths of 19 colours so that she can make a Midnight Garden quilt (quick peek of Deborah’s original if you click here!).  We can’t wait to see the results.

PS As a Guild member Janice is taking advantage of the 10% discount Oakshott Fabrics offer as part of the Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles Retailer Scheme.

Primordial, iridescent New Lipari

Lipari2016_range_ruched1 (2)

New Lipari perfectly captures the primordial beauty of the Aeolian islands. Its luminous colours mirror cobalt seas, lush greenery, pink bougainvillea and shimmering sun; a beauty shot through with dark, fine-grained volcanic rock and black sand.

The rich, soft drape of this 54″ wide fabric with its black warp and 18 lustrous wefts offers you distinctive, iridescent jewel tones to work with; see what inspired Oakshott Fabrics to create this collection.

Designers are describing this collection as:
‘luscious’ ‘dynamic’ ‘stunning’
New Lipari is available as cut lengths and in a choice of pre-cut packs, including Fat 8ths, Fat Quarters, Half Metre Blocks and 5” Squares. The 5″ Labelled Sample Swatch comes with a £5 Gift Voucher – now there’s temptation!
And if it’s inspiration you need, then look no further than our selection of Quilting Kits, created exclusively for us by some of the world’s leading designers.

Purple Days

Purple combines the calm stability of blue with the fierce energy of red. It’s often associated with royalty, nobility, luxury and power. Purple can represent wealth, creativity, wisdom, grandeur, devotion, peace, mystery, independence and magic.

We love designer Helen Howes’ use of purple in her Interpolations 3a / Inpurpleation Quilt (shown here in progress):

If you’re inspired, read the story behind her design and to make the project download the pattern from Helen Howes Textiles.

To celebrate the UK’s Mothering Sunday on 6 March 2016 we are offering 20% OFF selected purples up until 9am UK time on Monday 7 March. Use the promotional code MUM16 at the checkout when you purchase any of these selected purples from the Colourshott collection (just click on your chosen swatch to shop):

2016 MAQF Best Use of Color

Congratulations to Mary Menzer who won ‘Best Use of Color’ for ‘Quilt it Wright’ in the Mid Atlantic Quilt Festival, February 2016.

“This is my all Oakshott quilt inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. I love my Oakshotts!  Thanks for making a great product.”

MaryMenzer-MAQS-Winner

… and thanks Mary for making such great use of them.

Read all about Mary’s making journey and get some fantastic tips from her great five part description at  FairlyMerry blog where she describes her whole improv process, piecing, threads, basting, quilting, re-jigging, binding, and so on.

The Journey of the Ruby Red Quilt

Once upon a time The Little Red Hen (aka Lynn Harris) fell in love with a pack of Ruby Reds and designed a lovely little quilt:

“The Ruby Oakshott quilt is finished and I thoroughly enjoyed the quilting process on this one. It was a delight to watch the fabrics move past the presser foot. I was mesmerized by the subtle color change of the fabrics as the machine moved them along.”

Then one day Elizabeth Walters spotted the pattern and knew she wanted to make it for her daughter and that the design would need enlarging. She spent a long time seeking advice and drawing up a new pattern:RubyQuilt

She got in touch with Michael at Oakshott to source the Ruby Reds and has started work on the blocks:

RubyQuiltSquares

We look forward to seeing the finished quilt and are so glad to have been of service:

“You are the most responsive merchant I have every encountered! … it will be interesting to see how it turns out. After talking with 3 quilters who mostly shook their heads and didn’t know how to advise me, I xeroxed 15 copies of the photo and started cutting and pasting. Made the squares 6″ and triangles 3″ instead of 5″ and 2.5″ to decrease the ‘busyness’ and designed it so I would like it for the top of the bed – then just kept adding. I’m sure I will shift colors as I go along but I am loving putting them together.”

A great choice for naming a gorgeous fabric collection after.
Brilliantly named collection – the colours capture sunshine on brightly coloured clothing and sea! Love it!
And you agreed that as we head into our northern winter, we appreciate the vibrant colours of the Caribbean.

Bill’s Beauty

The purchase of a Fat Quarter Pack from the Oakshott stand at the Festival of Quilts led Bill Burrows of Cheltenham, UK, to create this quilt:

WilliamBurroughs

“The quilt was my own idea … the solid, dense structure and colours of the Oakshott mercerised shot fabric was perfect for lots of small panels. A less solid colour fabric would have looked wishy-washy.
The strong fabric is lovely to work with, easy to cut and it keeps its position beautifully while sewing. It has that slight sheen which the mercerising process gives the fabric.”
Although, Bill does live close enough to drop by occasionally for more fabric and kindly says:
“I am treated really well and you go to great lengths to find what I am looking for.”
So thanks for sharing the beautiful end result with us Bill.

Is the quilting world ready for Scandinavia?

Scandinavia is the name of Oakshott Fabrics’ newest shot cotton collection.

Scandinavia range_ruched1

The inspiration for this palette of eight calm, muted tones of vaporous blues, soft greys, milky whites and  woody shades comes from the clean, bright, airy colours of stylish Scandinavian interiors and the ethereal quality of northern winter light.

We’ve had great fun drawing up a Scandinavia board on Pinterest full of images that echo these luminous colours.

To celebrate the launch of Scandinavia Leanne Chahley  designed this beautiful  quilt/wallhanging (given a sneak preview at QuiltCon in Texas) called Hint:

USE-Hint-front

We love the graphic shapes and the texture the quilting gives the fabrics.

The kit for Hint is available in two sizes (40″ x 40″ / 102 cm x 102 cm or 84″x 84″ / 213 cm x 213 cm) complete with the fabric (enough for front and back) and a pattern booklet with template.

We hope you enjoy banishing the winter doldrums with these luscious Nordic lights.
