Moonlight and Starlight

Designer Helen Butcher, of Little Patch Pockets, has been going all starry-eyed over a bespoke collection of Oakshott  Fat Quarter Packs we’ve called Moonlight and Starlight.

Helen said that the Moonlight Pack (on left) reminded her of:

balmy summer evenings at sea with no sound but the ripple of waves against the hull.

While the strong contrasts of Starlight (on right)

evoked thoughts of bright moonlight transforming everyday objects into things unfamiliar and strange.

And she came with three stunning projects for you to indulge in: the Moonlight Serenade Cushion (and the kit makes three cushions); the Moonlit Sea Wallhanging; and the Cubitz Starlight Quilt.

Primordial, iridescent New Lipari

Lipari2016_range_ruched1 (2)

New Lipari perfectly captures the primordial beauty of the Aeolian islands. Its luminous colours mirror cobalt seas, lush greenery, pink bougainvillea and shimmering sun; a beauty shot through with dark, fine-grained volcanic rock and black sand.

The rich, soft drape of this 54″ wide fabric with its black warp and 18 lustrous wefts offers you distinctive, iridescent jewel tones to work with; see what inspired Oakshott Fabrics to create this collection.

Designers are describing this collection as:
‘luscious’ ‘dynamic’ ‘stunning’
New Lipari is available as cut lengths and in a choice of pre-cut packs, including Fat 8ths, Fat Quarters, Half Metre Blocks and 5” Squares. The 5″ Labelled Sample Swatch comes with a £5 Gift Voucher – now there’s temptation!
And if it’s inspiration you need, then look no further than our selection of Quilting Kits, created exclusively for us by some of the world’s leading designers.

Memories in Aruba

What a fantastic way to show off Oakshott’s trademark shot cotton weave using a traditional block and an Aruba Fat Quarter Pack. Rita Hodge of RedPepperQuilts chose this block because

‘the directional piecing creates a beautiful luminous, iridescent effect.’

The quilt’s finished size is 60 inches/1.5 metres square and the pattern is available from RedPepperQuilts Etsy Store and Pattern Store.

Oakshott have created little bundles of monochromatic impact; in this case we have picked out seven bundles, each one based around one colour with complementary tints, tones and shades added. Each combination comes as Fat 8ths, Fat Quarters and Half Metre Blocks:

Bill’s Beauty

The purchase of a Fat Quarter Pack from the Oakshott stand at the Festival of Quilts led Bill Burrows of Cheltenham, UK, to create this quilt:

WilliamBurroughs

“The quilt was my own idea … the solid, dense structure and colours of the Oakshott mercerised shot fabric was perfect for lots of small panels. A less solid colour fabric would have looked wishy-washy.
The strong fabric is lovely to work with, easy to cut and it keeps its position beautifully while sewing. It has that slight sheen which the mercerising process gives the fabric.”
Although, Bill does live close enough to drop by occasionally for more fabric and kindly says:
“I am treated really well and you go to great lengths to find what I am looking for.”
So thanks for sharing the beautiful end result with us Bill.

Steps to Chess on the Steps

Krista of Poppyprint in Canada has designed a fabulous modern quilt (featuring as pattern of the month in MQG‘s September newsletter). Her fascinating journey to the design, Chess on the Steps, is on her blog.

“This quilt was made entirely of the new Colourshott shot cottons …”

2014-10ChessOnTheSteps2“… The quilting was all done with free-form (unmarked) lines with my Pfaff IDT (built in walking foot).  I just followed seams in the piecing and went for it.  There are 7 coordinating colours of Aurifil 30 wt thread on the quilt.  Sewing with these shot cottons is so enjoyable as the colours are beautifully saturated – at times I feel like I’m working with sari silk!”
